My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Recap

Yup, I decided to watch this movie because Alyssa Milano's in it.

Jesse meets Ethan, someone she could finally fall in love with, but then she meets Troy, and now she has a dilemma.
Summary and rating here (No spoilers!)

And the first scene of the movie, this guy looked super familiar, so I decided to IMDB him, and guess who it was?

It's Henry from Ugly Betty! Moving from Ugly Betty to Alyssa Milano is not a bad jump. Props to this guy.

So the story starts out with Henry (who's actually named Ethan) running to the airport to chase down the girl he loves (who is not Alyssa Milano). And it turns out it's a story he wrote because he's a writer. But his publisher says that it's just not realistic because that never happens. Then, she tells him that women don't want it to really be realistic, because in real life, they end up settling for nice guys like him (ouch), so they want to see the fantasy of getting with a man who is sexy, charismatic, and all the things he is not. So she pretty much tells him to quit writing, and thus begins our story.

So he goes to a coffee shop as writers do, and he overhears this guy talking to Alyssa Milano, who is like a barista.

This guy's Beau Bridges, but honestly, that means very little to me. Just pointed him out because he looks super familiar. So he's her Uncle Logan, and he's inviting her for dinner, and he's complaining that she keeps bringing her brother, and is wondering when she will get a man. He gives her a talk, and is like "You gotta put yourself out there. It only gets harder if you wait. If you wait too long, you're going to wait forever". Life lessons.

And Alyssa Milano, looking cuter than ever, just listens and nods. Then, this line:

Alyssa Milano: "The coffee's free. Doctor's discount"
Uncle Logan: "You're thinking about cops. Doctors actually pay for their drinks."

Which I will definitely use if I ever meet a hot barista.

Then, boy meets girl moment:

Then two seconds later, girl wants the D:

I love me a classic love story.

Then, Alyssa Milano comes back and asks if she made it into his journal. So cute! I can't handle this cuteness!

So she starts asking about what he does, and she's like "You shouldn't give up on writing". Then she gives him an idea for a story: A desperate guy walks into a coffee shop and meets an amazing girl who convinces him not to give up hope. Then he goes: What happens next? Then she says: "I don't know. You're the writer. I just provide the inspiration!"

So he asks for her number if he needs some inspiration, and Alyssa Milano churns out this beautiful line:

Alyssa Milano: "I do not inspire well on an empty stomach"

GAMEPLAY. Turns out Alyssa Milano's name is Jesse, so I will start referring to her as such. So she's super happy that she just met a guy.

Then this tall, dark, handsome motherfucker walks in the door like fucking Jesus:

And you know it's about to get all complicated up in this bitch.

This fool had a call-in order to a coffee shop for some reason, then this commercial comes on the TV. Jesse tells him that her brother and her crack up every time they see the commercial because it's so brilliant.

So this guy gives her an award-winning smile, and nonchalantly brings up that it's his commercial

Because this fool makes commercials. Then Jesse says that commercials are the art of today's society, and Handsome Magoo says that his mom used to tell him that. And then we found out he is also a writer.

Then he does his charming thing, flashes dat smile, and gets her number.

And so then, Ethan (nerdy Henry Grubstick) shows up at Jesse's house, to take her on a date. So they're talking about her brother, and he's on the commercials for Spry Gum. Then we get cuts of him filming the commercial which are pretty funny.

Then they go to a baseball stadium and have a picnic. So they're talking about their lives, and it turns out Jesse got divorced from the guy she was in love with because she wasn't the right girl. So sad :(

Obligatory cute first date looking at the stars and talking pic:

OMG he just tried to hold her hand and she pulled her hand back up to her stomach. I can't contain these feels. But then she cuddles up next to him, so it's all good.

And so they go back to his place, and he keeps making all these awkward nervous sexual innuedos, like I'm all about speed ... in the bathroom.

Then she finds the book he tried to get published, and is impressed. Then she cuddles even closer to him while talking to him about how good his book is.

Then Jesse comes home the morning after!

And her brother asks if she sees any future with him, and she says "Depends..."
And then she's on a date with Troy (Handsome Magoo) at what seems to be a nightclub! So they go back to her apartment, and he does that first date lean against the door...

...but he doesn't give her a first night kiss to leave her wanting more! Gameplay!

And it works, because she looks out her door longing for him.

And now she's on a mini golfing date with Ethan! And then she goes on an actual golfing date with Troy!

So we reinforce the personalities of all of them. A quick rundown:

Ethan
Troy
Likes Star Wars
Likes classic rock
Saves her from being splashed by a cab
Has the keys to some building in the city
Takes her up to the roof
Gets a kiss at the end of the night
Gets a kiss at the end of the night

Then Uncle Logan talks about how he got with his wife, and it's because "She inspired me".

And then dates, and then Jesse's brother tells her she needs to tell Ethan about Troy, and she says she's going to.

Then Jesse meets Ethan's sister and their family. Then in classic cute kid manner, the daughter asks if Jesse and Ethan are going to get married and have a bunch of babies. So she sees how great Ethan is with kids.

Then Ethan gives Jesse a My Little Pony, which she talked about earlier that she loved as a kid. So then she doesn't tell Ethan about Troy.

Then Ethan says he's thinking about going into commercial advertising, but Jesse talks him out of it because she knows he can make it.

And then she tells him this really cute story about Charlie Brown, and how every time she kisses him she feels like she's flying. Just a really sweet story.

And then Troy tells her that his company is branching out to Austin. So he wants her to come with him. DECISION MAKING TIME!!!!!!!!!! And then she says that she kisses Troy, she feels like she's flying. Same line on two guys! That's straight up lazy.

UH OH. ETHAN IS PROPOSING TO JESSE! AND THEN SHE REJECTS HIS PROPOSAL! NOOOOOOO!!! And then she says "I can't be who you want me to be!"

And then she leaves a letter at his doorstep, and he reads it and looks sad.

And then she says yes to Troy (that she'll go with him).

Then the brother convinces her to tell Ethan everything. Ethan gets a letter in the mail, and his story got published because it had so much pain and anguish. Then there's a call on his phone, and he gets off the phone with his publisher, but when he looks again, the call is gone. Then he tries calling back, but Jesse turns off her phone because she's at the airport.

So he runs to her apartment, just like the beginning of the movie, and asks her brother if she's there. Then he runs to the airport just like the beginning with the brother's encouragement. Then it's exactly like the beginning of the movie, but when he hears a voice, it's not Jesse, just some TSA agent. Le sads.

Then he goes back to his apartment, and there's Jesse sitting on his couch! WHAAAT?

So they look at his manuscript: Troy Meets Girl. And it's the exact story of the entire movie, but he says he created a happy ending, where they get married and have 4 kids. And I totally got mindfucked here, because it appears that Troy is actually somebody he made up, with all of his lines occurs verbatim in his manuscript, complete with a scene montage of the best moments of the movie

And then she drops the bomb: she can't have children. She says Ethan deserves better. She says she's not whole and incomplete. That's why she got divorced from her previous marriage.

Ethan asks where she's going, and she says she took a job in Portland. Which is crazy because she's a barista. She can take a job anywhere. But that's really just a minor plot flaw.

Ethan says he's never been whole and complete without her. Then he says they can try to have babies. They should try a lot. Then he proposes again, and she accepts.

Then they get married and happily ever after. They do a scene blend, where one scene is Troy taking away Jesse in a limo, then one in real life where Ethan takes away Jesse in his shitty car, and it requires the wedding party to push his car so it can start.

I had to watch the scene montage about his book again to really get it. And it's just amazing. It shows how closely the two stories really mirror each other through flashbacks, how he changed how everything happened, and how two truths were perpetuated throughout the movie to just totally throw that curveball at us. Great ending.

Summary:

This was an awesome movie with an amazing ending. If I had any complaints about the movie, it would be that I didn't feel super invested in the characters for the larger part of the movie. Even though the characters were well developed, they didn't feel likeable or feel real enough. But by the end of the movie, everything really just ties together, and you can understand why they went that way with everything.

The one unexpectedly good part about this movie was the brother. At the beginning, he kind of just seemed like a character that was forced in there to show how much of a loser Jesse was beforehand, but he really added something. The movie would have been good without him, and could have been done without him, but he added something that really brought the movie to the next level. Watch the movie, and you'll understand.

But again, the movie's ending was simply amazing. Rom coms don't usually have that thing that make your heart drop to your stomach, but this one did. And the entire movie was pretty funny too. You should definitely watch this movie.

Rating: 9.6/10
