Mighty Fine Recap

During one of my marathon Youtube movie trailer sessions, I stumbled across the trailer for this movie, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Summary and rating here (No spoilers!)

So a brief overview of the characters:

The dad is this guy:

Who I thought was like Al Pacino famous since he looks so familiar, but it turns out he's just some random guy who's every single Italian mob member in every Italian mob movie ever made. Plus, he's Shorty on Modern Family.

The mom is Andie MacDowell, who plays a Jewish mother who escaped the Holocaust. She has the worst accent I've ever heard, and it's just so annoying.

The older daughter is Rainey Qualley, who is actually Andie MacDowell's daughter in real life, and is super hot. She's the angsty teen in this story. Most of this post will be screenshots of her. And they will be out of order probably. I forgot most of what happened in the movie, but needed somewhere to dump these screenshots.

The younger daughter is like a 7th grader, and she's narrating the story.

So the movie starts out with the Jewish family moving from Brooklyn to Louisiana because of the dad's business, which is like textiles or some kind of clothing. Not super important.

The house they move to is like a mansion and super nice. It starts out with just a trip to where they might buy a house, but the dad tells the mom that it's a surprise and they're moving there. And he just put her name on the deed as like a birthday present to her.

So he's super proud of this house, and he even has like this alarm/security system so his family is safe.

But Rainey Qualley, whose character's name is Maddie, is super bitchy, and whining about moving. Her mom is like: "Your dad is so happy here. It's not going to be like it was before".

So she sucks it up and makes friends and stuff. All while wearing her fine ass schoolgirl outfit.

And then she meets boy.

The little sister's struggling to make friends in school because she doesn't want to read aloud. She sees a flyer for a poetry contest, so she keeps trying to think of things to write about, but can't think of anything.

Then, they go out for a boat trip and the dad gets really angry when he can't get the boat started. Then the voice over goes "Maybe everything wasn't different.

Next, Maddie wants to take the boat out, but the dad snaps and yells at her.

Maddie brings her boyfriend over, then the dad arm wrestles him and grills him. And he gets super intense and he's like "You will never disrespect my daughter."

The dad is then at work, and his advisor tells him that textiles is a failing industry. He was banking on getting a lot of money from this one investor, but that guy pulled out. So they're going to go bankrupt. The dad can't accept it.

So the dad actually goes to the mob to take out a loan for the company. He then takes out his family to a play, and he says he will be back but he gets caught up in a meeting with the mob boss.

Next, their dog gets sick, so the dad, mom, and little sister go to the vet out of town, and decide to euthanize it. The little sister starts crying because Maddie never got the chance to say goodbye.

The dad gets Maddie a car, and they go driving. But she sucks at driving and the dad starts yelling. They start arguing and Maddie gets out of the car to walk home. The dad then intentionally almost runs her over. She starts crying and the mom finally gets mad at the dad.

Maddie then has a pool party, and the dad comes home early. He's super pissed and brings out his shotgun. He starts shooting, and everybody runs away. Then, Maddie is like: "You might as well shoot me! You're ruining my life!"

There's then this scene where Maddie is talking to her little sister and it seems like she's talking about running away. She begs her little sister to go with her. This is a cute scene.

Then, we get a scene of Maddie with her boyfriend, who she ran away with, and he starts yelling at this black guy for sitting on his car while he smoked. Maddie tells him that the black guy didn't do anything, but the boyfriend pulls out a "Down here, women don't tell men what to do!"

Oh snap.

She walks away in epic drama queen fashion.

There's then a scene where the mom is confronting the dad and telling him she's scared of him. The Maddie returns back home just at the right time. The dad then shoves the mom in an angry rage, then Maddie comes to her defense, then the dad slaps her.

The dad then yells "Everything's turning to shit! When are you going to get it through your thick skulls? I hate my fucking life!" and goes upstairs.

He grabs his handgun and holds it up to his chin. Then we get a gunshot.

The women then rush to see what happened, but he didn't shoot himself. The children are breaking down crying, then the daughters yell at the mom about how she never confronts the dad. And how someone has to kill themselves to actually get noticed.

So the mom goes downstairs and presses the panic button on their alarm system. It blares and everybody comes down.

The mom is like "We're in trouble". The police come, and she's like "He (the dad) is terrorizing us".

Then the dad goes "Tell them this is my house!". Then the mom goes "No Joe! This is my house!" Because he made the mistake of putting her name on the deed. Geez man.

Then, the little sister gets a letter and she won the poetry contest! So she gets to read her poem aloud to an audience of people.

Dat lip bite by the way.

The essence of it is this: "There's a monster in dad. And it makes him wicked mad. Tame the monster in dad, and save this mighty fine family." It rhymes, but I'm not going to write down the whole poem.

And you see the dad in the audience, smiling and giving her a standing ovation.

Then it goes "That's the way I wish it had been." Then they pan over to the dad at a mental institution, and were like, at least he was getting help.

Then it ends with her saying that even though she wasn't Anne Frank, who she kind of idolized throughout the movie, she found herself, and her dad found himself, and they found each other again, and that was enough.

Summary:

This movie was okay. Some parts were really good, and some parts were kind of boring, and it kind of evened out. The dynamic between the siblings is cute, and the little sister is pretty likeable. It's kind of a story about trying to start everything anew, but people struggling really change. And it kind of illustrates the hope they have that things will get better, and how that turns out.

My one big issue with this movie is Maddie. Even though she was super fine, she was super annoying. And maybe that was by design. But she'd do something that would clearly make her dad mad. Then cry about it. Then go do it again. And the car driving scene was super weird and pretty uncomfortable.

And maybe a bigger issue was the mom. And that was also definitely by design. First of all, her accent was super weird. Like it just plain sucked. Then her mannerisms throughout the movie were just kind of like cringeworthy. But maybe it was by design.

Overall, not a bad movie. I wouldn't exactly call it enjoyable in any sense, but I didn't get the impression  that it would be from the trailer. So a decent movie, but nothing I would really want to watch again.

Rating: 5/10
